Planning Commission Hearing Scheduled for Koolau Poko Sustainable Communities Plan

The Honolulu Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to revise the Koolau Poko Sustainable Communities Plan (SCP) Wed., July 6, at 1:30 p.m., at the Pali Golf Course Banquet Hall. The SCP is the region’s long-range plan that guides decisions and actions related to land use, infrastructure, zoning and urban design matters. The revised Koolau Poko SCP addresses the community’s vision by setting policies and guidelines for public and private investments. Key elements of the plan’s vision call for:

  • Adapting the concept of ahupua‘a in land use and natural resource management
  • Preserving and promoting open space and agricultural uses
  • Preserving and enhancing scenic, recreational and cultural features that define Koolau Poko’s sense of place
  • Emphasizing alternatives to the private passenger vehicle as modes for travel
  • Protecting and enhancing residential character while adapting to changing needs
  • Maintaining the community-growth boundary to protect agricultural, open space and natural resources

The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) is expected to recommend an amendment proposed by Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery recognizing the importance of treating cemeteries consistently with other open space uses in land designated as “Preservation.”

The Planning Commission will forward its recommendations to the Honolulu City Council for further review and action. A copy of the revised plan and more information are available at www.honoluludpp.org/planning
